Learning to Read the Snow: Avalanche Education on Mount Washington

Carly, a University of Maine student and Backcountry Squatters chapter leader, took her AIARE 1 Avalanche Training Course on Mount Washington, New Hampshire this past winter as a recipient of the Backcountry Squatters Scholarship for Outdoor Education. Through hands-on avalanche education, snowpack analysis, and backcountry travel, she built the skills needed to move more safely through winter mountain environments. Her story highlights the importance of community and creating supportive spaces where others can grow their confidence in the outdoors.

Gals on the Gorge: University of Utah took on the green river with their spring chapter grant

This past fall, University of Utah squatters embarked on a three-day raft trip down the Green River made possible with BCS’s chapter grant.
